"I finally crawl out of my grave only to find that my country is gone." [1]

Namulith (ナムリス, namurisu, pronounced ['nɑ.mu.lɪθ]) is the "Divine Emperor (神聖皇帝, shinseiKōtei)" of Dorok. He is over a century old, surviving by having his brain periodically transplanted into cloned bodies. Namulith assassinates his younger brother, Miralupa, and usurps the authority of the priests to assume the sole reign of what remains of Dorok.

Appearance and Characteristics[]

Namulith is the older brother of Miralupa but lacks his brothers supernatural psychic abilities. To compensate, he uses cloned bodies to achieve a long lifespan. He is known for wearing an eye helmet that provided him with all-around vision, rumored to send images from the eyes around the central visor straight to the brain. Before being revealed in his iconic attire, he briefly outfitted with an eye veil similar to his brother Miralupa's. He is adorned with a robe bearing striking markings and a large eye on the center chest, which are said to be the garments of the holy emperor of Dorok, as stated by Lord Yupa upon meeting him for the first time. During his brief battle with Nausicaä, he is pictured wearing a large cloak with the same pattern and fur lining near the collar. Later, Namulith is depicted bathing; during this scene, we can see that he is pictured with short hair of a presumably lighter color. [2] He is rarely seen without some sort of grin or smirk.

Personality[]

Namulith is characterized as being extremely reckless and nonchalant. He is often depicted speaking in a very teasing or joking manner and is very charismatic. Despite this, he speaks rather eloquently, befitting his status as emperor. Namulith appears to care very little for the state of affairs and treats most everything as if it is lighthearted and merely a game, no matter how serious the circumstance. Despite his nature, he is rather enigmatic and doesn't seem to act inherently out of malice or bloodlust but simply out of rather or not, he considers the action amusing or not. This is later reinforced by an interview done by Hayao Miyazaki himself, where he states, "[Namulith] didn't really want Kushana. It seemed amusing to him, so he got engaged to her" and then adds how "I wondered if he were thinking bloodthirsty thoughts, but he wasn't. He couldn't."

Early Life and History[]

While his exact age is unknown, Namulith is confirmed to be over 100 years old. Namulith is the first son of the First Dorok Emperor, as highlighted by the Master of the Garden to Nausicaä, making him the Second Dorok Emperor. In Namulith's early life, he lost his father at a young age, as Miralupa is seen having a flashback of himself as a young child witnessing the death of his father. [3] This assumedly also means that Namulith took the throne at an early age due to the absence of his father.

Due to Namulith's lack of supernatural abilities, the actual leadership and decision-making fell to Miralupa. Miralupa serves as the tangible will of the nation of Dorok, where Namulith spent a century as a mouthpiece holding no real power outside of being a religious figurehead. This leads to pent-up boredom and the sensation of feeling trapped, which coalesces into Namulith plotting to kill Miralupa and succeeding, temporarily taking back his freedom and autonomy. [4] He then takes control of the Heedra and draws power from them rather than the Dorok theocracy, as his brother did. He uses his regained power to disassemble the Council of Monks in Dorok and orders that they are to be executed, ending the theocratical reign in Dorok.

He uses the Heedra to capture Kushana, whom he wants to marry, to unite the Torumekians and the Doroks for plans he does not disclose. Later, Namulith offers to save Kushana's men returning from Sapata who are near the mutant miasma spores, under the condition that she marries him; he stipulates that he could care less what she does with herself and offers her complete autonomy, his only real desire is to obtain her men and the military might of Torumekia. [5] Kushana reluctantly agrees, sensing ulterior motives through his reckless and negligent demeanor. During this duration of time, Namulith acts very nonchalantly and is extremely lighthearted, appearing not to take the situation seriously, alluding to the fact that he cares little for the state of the world but engages simply on the basis that he finds the events amusing.

Later, Nausicaä herself meets Namulith for the first time, and they engage in a short battle, where Namulith attempts to stop in her tracks of returning the God-warrior Ohma, to the earth. During this fight, Namulith points out that she behaves in a very similar way to how his late brother, Miralupa, did in his youth. He comments that the god-warrior and the Heedra are born from the darkness of the human soul and that the divine types like herself disgust him for thinking they can save the world. remarking that she is just as Miralupa was 100 years ago, adding how Miralupa used to be a generous philosopher king before his duties weighed heavily on his soul. Stating if she had the burdens he did, she would not be so righteous. [6] Nausicaä then rouses the god-warrior, and lord Yupa disguised as a Dorok Warrior Monk, briefly incapacitates Namulith. While Namulith is briefly stunned, the god-warrior fires in his general direction, slicing an arm clean off; Namulith is surprised and laughs, fleeing deeper into the Dorok air monitor ship he was aboard.

After being hurt by the newborn God-Warrior, Namulith indicates to Kushana that he no longer possesses a human body but that of a Heedra; having been converted by the scientists of the Crypt of Shuwa, he expresses that despite his body not being a real human body that it still feels as though it is, and thus can feel all of his fatal wounds as if it was. This allows him to survive the injury inflicted by the infant God-Warrior and makes him virtually indestructible. At this point, Kushana revolts, unable to tolerate his recklessness any longer. At this juncture, Namulith confesses that he no longer wishes to live, as no matter what he does, it always turns out just as the Master of the Crypt says it will. This alludes to his plan, acting so recklessly and negligently in the first place as a desperate attempt to undermine the Crypt and break the cycle of the Crypt arbitrating the fate of him and Dorok. [7] Namulith is then beheaded by an irritated Kushana, who takes offense to his recklessness; he is brought out to view the destruction he helped put in motion and is greatly amused by this. Still, before admiring the turn of events fully, he is discarded, and his head falls off the Dorok air monitor ship he was aboard as he quips that things are finally getting interesting.

Trivia[]

  • There was a Nausicaä Kabuki screenplay in which Namulith briefly appeared.
  • In an interview, Hayao Miyazaki said Namulith takes painkillers, which he is pictured taking in a few manga panels.
